Symposium Description 

Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open pedagogical approaches allow us to imagine new ways of engaging students, creating community, and empowering faculty. OER are teaching, learning, and research resources made available for free use and re-purposing by others. Often praised for their role in lowering textbook costs for students, Open practices offer new pathways to improving student learning and sense of belonging through authentic representation in learning materials and inclusion in curricular development. In creating, adapting, and adopting open materials and approaches, instructors join a community of like-minded educators committed to rigor, authorship, openness, and support.  

Faculty, students, and staff across UVA are engaged in Open practices, employing the pedagogies, tools, technologies, and mindsets of Open Education. This symposium invites seasoned practitioners and curious explorers of Open Educational to learn from others, create new partnerships, and share ongoing work.

Keynote Speaker

Professor Jasmine Roberts-Crews is a lecturer in the School of Communication at the Ohio State University, where she teaches in the areas of public relations writing, digital activism and campaign strategy. Her advocacy work centers on the experiences of people of color and women. She has also delivered a TED talk titled “I’m tired of talking about race”, where she discusses the emotional fatigue people of color experience dealing with racial injustices. Along with her communication expertise, Professor Roberts-Crews is also a renowned open education leader. She has delivered numerous keynote presentations across the country on the topics of social justice in open education. She is the author of the openly-licensed book "Writing for Strategic Communication Industries." In her spare time, she loves to connect with her wife, fur babies (2 dogs), and green babies (50 plants total).

Reclaiming Justice in Open Education

Keynote Description

As a philosophical concept, open education argues education should be affordable, inclusive, equitable, and relevant to learners. The egalitarian ideas behind open education point to an emerging effort for centering social justice in open educational practices and values, as several social justice frameworks for open education exist. This keynote discusses current discourses and various viewpoints on the intersection between social justice and open education values and practices, the advancements and limitations of current applications, and how we can reclaim justice in open education through communal care.
