Opening Fall 2021: LDT studios and spaces!

After nearly 18 months of limited availability, LDT is excited to reopen our spaces to the UVA community this fall.

Expect some new programs, technologies, and faces when you visit us in the fall. University policies will be in effect. Access schedules and more information via the Spaces section of our website (link to spaces).

New for Fall 2021

Teaching Studio (WIL 234)

This fall, we’ll also be launching our new Teaching Studio in Wilson 234. The Studio is a flexible space for A&S instructors and TAs to explore common UVA classroom technologies at their own pace, and to consider new applications of instructional technologies to foster engaged teaching and learning. Instructors can work alone or with the support of an Instructional Designer, as needed.

New Active Learning Classrooms

In cooperation with UVA Classrooms, A&S Learning Design and Technology supports faculty use of Active Learning classroom spaces across grounds. Several new Active Learning (link to Active Learning page) rooms will open this fall in Chemistry (CHEM 204, 205, 317, 306). Faculty can request space for upcoming semesters (limited availability).

STEM Makerspace and Virtual Reality Room

The STEM Makerspace in the Chemistry building (room 201) and the STEM Virtual Reality Room (room 202) will be "soft opening" this fall. We are still in the process of fleshing out these spaces with programming, tools, and support, and we welcome your input!

Updates to Existing LDT Spaces

Language Commons and Lab

The Language Commons (link languagecommons.as.virginia.edu) will reopen under the supervision of a new coordinator, LDT Instructional Designer Chad Diehl.

This fall, the Commons will open as usual for classes and activities. It will also feature new technologies to facilitate online and hybrid events. Language course instructors, departments, and student organizations are welcome to reserve the LC for upcoming activities beginning Monday, August 9.

The Language Lab will reopen for fall classes under the expert supervision of Keith Samuels. We expect to open at full capacity (24 student computers) with new computers and a variety of programs to support language course activities. The reservation calendar will open August 9 and will be announced on the Language Commons & Lab website and in the Language Commons newsletter.

STEM Commons

The STEM Commons in Gilmer is currently closed for renovation. An Immersive STEM space in Chemistry (2nd floor) will be available later this semester.
