Stage 2 of the Portuguese Supplemental OER Project Textbook for Beginner and Intermediate Portuguese and Fine Tuning the New Curriculum for the Advanced Class.

Project Summary: The project aims to create and adapt more practice materials and tools for students of Portuguese using an OER textbook that focuses on themes and authentic content from diverse and inclusive sources.

Last year, in Phase 1 of this project, I began to prepare essential practice materials and tools for Beginner (PORT 1110), and Intermediate (2120) Portuguese to supplement the online textbook (Plural: Português pluricêntrico ), which I have been using since the Fall of 2022. This OER textbook is centered on themes and authentic content in Portuguese (YT videos, online journalism, Instagram creators, memes, etc.) that are diverse, inclusive, and which build awareness of social justice issues. The response from students to the textbook have been very positive, but more materials need to be adapted and created. In addition to creating H5P practice activities, I intend to experiment with using AI both to produce teaching materials, and to create prompts for students to use as learning tools. I plan to edit and use the video interviews I have recorded with native speakers of Portuguese. Finally, I will continue to work on adapting an existing OER for Advanced Portuguese (PORT 3010). The OER textbook I use for the 1110 and 2120 classes is a PDF, one with many links to YouTube videos and Instagram posts, and therefore, the accessibility to the materials needs to be assessed and addressed for future students.
