Returning Historically Inaccessible Information and Learning Materials to the Classroom

Project Summery: The project aims to democratize the study of Chinese calligraphy by creating Open Education Resources (OER) for enhanced accessibility and engagement.

Chinese calligraphy, a dynamic set of artifacts, techniques, and insights that has evolved over millennia, has been historically inaccessible to the majority of the Chinese population. This project seeks to integrate materials from the EAST 1200 Asian Calligraphy course into Pressbooks, an online publishing platform, to create OER. The learning materials will include Master Wu’s new book on Xizhi Wang’s Calligraphy, presentation slides, calligraphy demonstrations and lecture videos, 3D STL renderings, and students’ reflections. The project will employ OER practices to involve students as co-creators of content, engaging them in peer review, copyright discussions, and dialogical interactions across semesters. It will also interweave social justice principles by making historically inaccessible materials available, teaching about material access restrictions, and engaging with brush stroke methods.
