Recrafting Introduction to Media Studies

Project Summary: The project aims to redesign a large lecture course in Media Studies using learning technologies and course design frameworks to improve student learning, engagement, and assessment.

Recrafting Introduction to Media Studies will focus on pedagogical and organizational improvements based on the incorporation of learning technologies and course design techniques to benefit students, instructors, and graduate teaching assistants in this large lecture course.

The goal of this project is to rebuild the structure for this popular lecture course and prepare students for future coursework in media studies. A new course framework will provide faculty with the flexibility to incorporate emerging areas of study while maintaining a strong foundation for students entering the major. Revised assessments and standards for evaluation will offer students more meaningful feedback and consistent grading without overburdening instructors. And new channels for communication between students and instructors will help everyone move beyond email as the primary medium.

The outcomes of this project will be put immediately into practice and shape the learning experience of hundreds of future Media Studies students at UVA.
