Learning Spaces in the Metaverse
Since June 2020, Jason Bennett from LDT and I have explore the idea of teaching econ in VR. Spring ‘22 has been our 3rd semester teaching small econ classes in virtual reality; over the last three semesters we have learned what works and what doesn’t for “learning in the metaverse”. I want to build on this foundation and continue exploring learning spaces in the metaverse. Our goals are twofold: 1) To generalize the VR skill building we did in the last 3 econ VR classes and apply them to a new Catalyst bootcamp course that I will offer next fall (LASE 2515-002), and 2) to implement learning spaces in VR or AR at scale in my large introductory econ class (econ 2010-300). For the first goal, the 2-credit Catalyst bootcamp course will allow me to expand and perfect the 3d teaching and learning approaches outside of economics. The second goal is more experimental, but we have had some preliminary successes using VR as a “3D Whiteboard while in the classroom: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWdXJUDY7M4. We will continue exploring this idea while also imagining ways for students to use their phones and laptops to participate without VR headsets.
