Fostering Collaborative Learning in Biochemistry: Enhancing Students Engagement and Success through Redesigned Discussion Sessions
This project seeks to create a collaborative and inclusive environment in a large Biochemistry class by restructuring discussion sessions, particularly among highly competitive students. Two major components will be redesigned: (1) the structure of the discussion sessions and (2) the types of activities assigned to students during these sessions. The new structure will integrate evidence-based active learning tools to foster a collaborative and inclusive environment. Students will now engage in designated small groups of five (as opposed to the previous 30-person groups), with each member assigned a specific role. Additionally, three new types of activities will be designed and implemented, such as (1) problem set, (2) case studies/bioinformatics and (3) mock exams.
Within these smaller groups, students will collaborate to solve assignments under the guidance of class Teaching Assistants (TAs). This active-learning collaborative approach is intended to boost students' comprehension and retention of course material, thereby enhancing their overall performance and learning experience.
