Expansion of Islamic studies course materials to include digital archives

This project aims to update the course syllabus for an essential Islamic studies course to include the most significant online resources for the field.

Introduction to Arabic and Islamic Studies, a required course for Islamic studies majors and minors, currently focuses on print sources for Arabic and Persian academic scholarship. The project aims to expand the reference material for discussion and research to include the most important online resources available for koranic studies, Islamic history and historiography, Muslim biography, the study of prophetic tradition, lexicography and Arabic and Persian grammar, poetry and poetics, etc. Students will gain remote access to materials in Middle Eastern manuscript libraries which have become available in digital format, and to secondary resources published online in English, German, and French. It will also mitigate the constraints presented by the Alderman library renovations and the lingering effects of the pandemic.
