Creating K-pop music videos in Korean language class
This project aims to engage students in learning Korean language through authentic materials that can attract students’ genuine interest. This is a program level project that will require students enrolled in all levels of Korean language classes to participate. Recently, Korean culture has gained popularity among the young, causing an increasing rise in Korean language course enrollment. Their major motivation for learning the Korean language is to understand K-pop music along with learning Korean culture. In accordance with the phenomenon of K-pop as motivation for language learning, as well as the heightened need for teaching intercultural communicative competence in foreign language, this project will require students from all levels of Korean classes to write their own lyrics for their favorite K-pop song and make a music video using the UVA Learning Technology such as Extempore and Kaltura. This process will enable students not only to learn how to utilize various technology tools in language learning but also to learn how to communicate with peers and the instructor through the process. In addition, students will develop both writing and speaking skills, gain a sense of achievement upon the completion of the project, and enjoy autonomy by choosing the song they like and writing their own lyrics that reflect their level of fluency.Â
