Equipment

If you are not familiar with our studio, please take a look at the following 360 tour of the Media Production Studio (tour is at the bottom of the page) to see a list of all the available equipment. Please note that our equipment is not recommended for users with little to no experience with video production. If you have TA or GA students available, we recommend enlisting them to assist you with your video recordings. We also have instructional guides on using our studio camerasgreenscreenteleprompters, and TV. If you are unsure how to edit video footage, please contact Jessica for a consultation and recommendations.

Making a Reservation

Create an account on our Connect2 Reservation System by Logging in via NetBadge.

After you have logged into the reservation system, you will now be able to reserve the Media Production Studio:

  1. Log into the system using NetBadge.
  2. Select Book by Category -> Rooms.
  3. If you are using the studio during staffed hours and do not have card access, choose the Media Production Studio listing. If you have been given card access, you can use the listing titled Media Production Studio - Card Users, which will allow you to schedule times outside of staffed hours.

More in-depth instructions on making reservations can be found here. We strongly encourage you to book more time than you think you will need to avoid needing to make an additional reservation to complete your recording.

Using the Studio

SD Cards

You are free to bring your own SD cards to use with our video cameras, but each studio camera has an SD card available for you to use to record your footage. If you would like to use ours, we recommend bringing a laptop with you to your reservation so that you may transfer the footage to it. If you do not have a card slot on your laptop, we have a USB card reader (and an Apple computer adapter) present in the room for you to use. If you plan on using our SD cards and also will not be able to bring a laptop to transfer your footage, you can use one of the editing lab computers in Wilson 207 to import your footage.

Leaving the Studio

Turn off all studio lights, including the overhead lights and the exterior Recording light. Remember to take all your belongings with you, and to transfer your footage prior to leaving when using the studio SD cards.

Technical Issues

If you find that any equipment is missing, damaged, or non-functional during your reservation, please fill out the following form or let one of the Media Studio consultants know so that we may address the issue ASAP.

Tips for Recording

  1. Record in short chunks to avoid having to re-record long lectures. Shorter videos (5-15 minutes) are also easier for students to access and engage with than long lectures.

  2. Try not to include information that dates your content, such as an announcement about a homework assignment or a change to the syllabus. The idea to pre-recording lecture content is to be able to reuse it for future classes. If you still want to include this kind of info, make sure it is at the beginning or end of the video so it makes it easier for you to edit it out if you need to later.

  3. If you have a script you will read verbatim, it is a good idea to use the teleprompter. You can choose to manually scroll, set a defined scrolling pace, or, if using PromptSmart Pro, utilize the voice recognition software. If you are using bullet-points or notes with the teleprompter, you will not be able to use the voice recognition option.

  4. We do not recommend using Auto mode on the cameras as the camera will default to using the internal microphone, which is not as good as the external microphones available in the room.

  5. You can review your footage directly on the camera in playback mode or by inserting the SD card into a computer and bringing up your files.
