Community of Inquiry as an Approach to Student Engagement

The Community of Inquiry framework (CoI) is a robust and comprehensive approach to teaching, learning, and assessment. Developed by Garrison and colleagues (link https://coi.athabascau.ca/coi-model/), the CoI framework focuses attention on three "presences" that contribute significantly to the success of any course: "social presence" which deals with the level of communal cohesion students feel in the course, "cognitive presence" which deals with the coherence and clarity of the course material, and "teaching presence" which imagines guidance, leadership, and teaching as core responsibilities of all members of the community felt by the students by the end of the course.  Grounded in extensive pedagogical research, the CoI approach is applicable to in-person, online, and blended/hybrid course environments.

At LDT, CoI informs our understanding of the educational experience as we partner with faculty on course design projects. True to the CoI framework, LDT also organizes online communities that instructors can join to further explore their pedagogy within this framework.
